
Browser extensions feel free. You click install, grant a few permissions without reading them closely, and move on. But every extension running in your browser is actively consuming memory, processing power, and sometimes your data – and most people have accumulated far more of them than they realize, quietly dragging down a browser that used to feel fast.

An extension isn't just an icon that sits idle until you click it. Many run scripts continuously on every page you visit, scanning content, injecting elements, or communicating with external servers – even ones you rarely open manually, like a coupon finder or a grammar checker. That constant background activity is where the real performance cost comes from, not the extension's icon sitting in your toolbar.
Each active extension adds to your browser's memory footprint and can slow page load times, since many inject code into every single webpage before it fully renders. With a handful of extensions, this might be unnoticeable. With a dozen or more – which is common for people who've been installing tools over years without ever removing old ones – the cumulative effect becomes obvious: sluggish tab switching, delayed page loads, and a browser that feels heavier than it should.
Performance isn't the only cost. Extensions often request broad permissions – the ability to "read and change all your data on websites you visit" is common, even for tools that only need access to a single site. That level of access means the extension developer could, in theory, see everything you type or view on any page, which matters more for extensions that haven't been updated recently or come from developers with limited track records.
Extensions also get bought and sold. A tool you trusted when you installed it can quietly change ownership, and a new owner isn't obligated to maintain the same privacy standards – some abandoned or acquired extensions have been caught injecting ads or tracking scripts well after the original developer moved on.
Most people are surprised by how many extensions they've accumulated once they actually look. To check:

Disable rather than uninstall extensions you use occasionally but not often, like a tool for a specific task you do a few times a year. Disabling stops it from running in the background without losing your settings if you need it again later.
Remove entirely anything you don't recognize, haven't used in months, or that requests permissions disproportionate to what it actually does.
If you want to see the real impact rather than guessing, disable all your extensions temporarily and restart your browser. Compare how quickly pages load and how responsive tab switching feels. Then re-enable extensions one at a time over a few days, watching for any that noticeably slow things down again – this makes the culprit obvious rather than leaving you guessing.
Don't install extensions from unfamiliar developers just because they're free and highly rated – ratings can be manipulated, and a large user count doesn't guarantee safety. Avoid granting "read and change all your data on all websites" permissions to extensions that only need to function on one specific site; most browsers let you restrict permissions to specific sites instead of granting blanket access. And don't ignore extension update prompts indefinitely – outdated extensions are more likely to have unpatched security issues.
How many browser extensions is too many? There's no universal number, but if you can't remember what half your extensions do, that's a reasonable signal it's time for a cleanup regardless of the exact count.
Do ad blockers slow down browsing too? Reputable ad blockers generally improve load times overall by preventing ad scripts and trackers from loading, despite adding their own small processing overhead.
